- DIVA By DIVA(s) ... Re-born! A Delightful 'Good Feeling' Evening
The 62-voice strong GAY MEN'S CHORUS of San Diego, By Rob Appel
The David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center (in La Jolla) once again hosted the Gay Men's Chorus of San Diego in a plethora of diva-songs from every gay man's favorite diva-star-song-book! The 60-plus member Gay Men's Chorus, under Founder-Musical Director Gary Holt and Choreographer-Director Joey Landwehr, gave out a full dose of diva-fever, opened with some DIVA HISTORY (Josephine Baker and Edith Piaf). (As noted) From Beyonce wearing a replica of Josephine Baker's infamous banana skirt to Judy Garland's OVER THE RAINBOW being named the Best Song of the past 100 years by the American Film Institute, the DIVA influence is everywhere here in the 21st century. Name a famous female entertainer from France and Brazil and more than likely you'll think of Edith Piaf and Carmen Miranda.

- The Tao of Gay
Can we just be gay, dammit?, by Gary Thayer
While it's true that most of my chorus mates couldn't pitch a ball or strike out a batter, they can hold a pitch and strike a fierce pose. Maybe that's why the San Diego Padres chose us to sing the national anthem at a Sunday game earlier this month. There we were, more than 60 out gay men, standing anxiously in the middle of a major league baseball field while the players warmed up, with 40,000 eyes upon us. I tried to look my butchest, while secretly hoping I wouldn't have to toss back any stray balls that might come our way. When the announcer introduced us, I expected him to muffle or leave out the word "Gay." But instead he read it clearly and loudly: "...the Gay Men's Chorus of San Diego!" The few boos we heard were drowned out by very loud cheers, mainly from the thousand-plus GLBT fans in attendance that day. It was a surreal moment, but one I'm proud to have been part of. www.gaylesbiantimes.com>>

- The national 'them
A day at the ballpark with the Gay Men's Chorus, by Troy Johnson
There they are. In bright red shirts, dotting the perimeter of Petco Park like beacons of bad fashion. The shirts are brand new, of sturdy cotton, with big, clunky necks that usually expose tourists or parents attempting to 'be casual." They read, 'Save Our Kids" in white lettering. The typeface is jagged, youth-oriented. If a typeface could be 'fun," this typeface would be trying really hard to be fun. sdcitybeat.com>>
